Fine Art Fetish Friday

Medieval manuscripts weren’t all religious Latin, you know. Here are some memorable illustrations, all from about 1300-1400.

@emmasfriend I love medieval manuscripts. The illuminations are wonderful—and not just the naughty stuff. Great depictions of animals, for instance.

I remember being shown a manuscript much older than these.

It was in Melk Abbey on the Danube in Austria.
It was displayed in a glass case, showing the front page, beautifully illuminated and the words "Bedae Venerabilis" .....[By the Venerable Bede]

And by the 14th century there was quite a lot of secular literature being writtn in (Middle) Eng!ish, including Chaucer's Canterbury Tales.

Ah, yes. Those pious monks.

What was going through the heads of some of these monks?

@Degbeme They had their eyes on the nuns!

The Abbot might make Mother Superior a mother if he has forgotten to wear his pigs bladder.
