My wife’s birthday went well yesterday, albeit bittersweet

We went out to dinner, then afterwards, I was able to sorta surprise her with a birthday cake. I played it off like I wasn’t going to get her one, but after dinner, we went to the bakery acting like I was only going to buy her some pan dulces, when I was actually picking up her tres leches cake I ordered last week. She was so happy, she cried.

I was considering rubbing it in her face a bit, honestly. She’s been pretty awful to me these past few months, but in spite of everything, I still love her enough to get her a cake, even if she doesn’t deserve one. But she ended up saying all that about herself, saying she doesn’t deserve me and acknowledging she needs to be a better spouse. A bit sad, but I’m glad I didn’t have to say it this time.

At least the night ended on a more positive note. We made ourselves margaritas, which we got pretty drunk off of, while enjoying a slice of that cake. We get along so much better when we’re drunk, which is also kinda sad, looking back on it. But at least we were able to salvage the evening and have fun together, something we don’t do a whole lot anymore. Overall, she said she had a nice 31st birthday, so I’m happy for that.

I won’t hold my breath on our marriage improving after this. I’ll just be glad we’re still able to share some happier times together.
