I'm pissed off. Half the Innovation section on the BBC website is about AI

What about materials science? Rocket science? Chemistry? Medicine? Is that all the fucking innovation we're capable of now?

I've had the same thought for a while now. I have a tech news feed that I listen to sometimes and it's been full of AI this and AI that and I'm like what about the rest of the tech world?!?!!?

I'm glad you mentioned material science and medicine in particular. My dad is a researcher in the first and my mom is a researcher in the second. And there is SO MUCH happening in both their fields, but none of it makes the news like it used to.

@sarabee1995 They've managed to engineer a therapy that detonates and takes out colon cancer cells

@Longpatrol Very cool. Cancer is something we really need to get together on and just crush. We could do it if we decided to. Cancer just fucking sucks. 😠

I think AI is really hyped.
Yes it's a useful tool, yes it's interesting.
But it's not the only interesting technology, and it's being misused.
It's not meant to replace people, and it's not a substitute for a professional.
It should be used to make mundane work easier, not thinking it's a replacement for people who are qualified in their fields.

Also - it's not even AI.
It's an LLM - a Language Learning Model.
It's not intelligent, it's not conscious, it's not sentient. It has algorithms (complex ones) that just spit out data that the model was "trained" on.

We aren't anywhere near an Artificial General Intelligence or Artificial Super Intelligence.

@MarineBob How do you figure that?

People think AI is some kind of panacea that is going to solve all our problems in all the other areas.

Except really it's just a slop-generator making everything worse--but it's what's making money right now so it's the only thing that's going to get attention.
What about them greedily using licence payer money? They should become private like any other news channel.
