Animals are stunned here in Norway but is still halal because a prayer of thanks is spoken to the animal before it actually dies. The same could surely be done in the UK.

The slaughter method Nortura uses at its slaughterhouses varies between the type of animal. Cattle get a bolt in the brain, before the throat is cut. Small cattle, i.e. sheep and lambs, are given an electric shock, while the chickens are gassed. The prayer of gratitude is recited after the cattle have received the bolt in the head, but before the throat is cut. Similarly for the other animals.
