The planet has been around 4 billion years but most of it has been uninhabitable to humans. If we're happy to just die without a fight, which is what he is recommending, we can indeed stop worrying about the environment. For example we can not worry about hardening out powerlines to solar flares, and just wait until we lose the internet.
He is not wrong there is very little we can do to the planet, but we can certainly impact the current living ecosystem. Humans have the technology to remove all the fish from the oceans, for example, and we're well on our way to doing just that.
