It may have been the repairs the owners made to the house. The house was in disrepair when they bought it, so they replaced the asphalt shingle roof with a metal roof, and surrounded the house with river stones and removed most of the foliage.

They said that pieces of fiery wood were blowing through Lahaina and landing on asphalt roofs nearby, causing houses to catch fire.
