A big tree went down in my backyard last night

Longpatrol · 31-35, M
You should count the tree rings! I think it would be cool to know How old it was
SW-User
Glad no one was injured
Harlow · 31-35, F
@SW-User yeah me too. The rain was coming down hard, and the wind blew like crazy last night. When I heard a loud crack and swoosh sounds, I knew a big tree went down.
caccoon · 36-40
It looks like Grumpy!!!
Harlow · 31-35, F
@caccoon lol I saw that too. He mad about his hair cut 😂
caccoon · 36-40
@Harlow HAHA he's just going bald, no shame in that!

Also, I'm glad you're safe! 🤗🤗

@caccoon 🤗🤗
Coppercoil · M
Its so strange it broke right where it did.. not rotten or nothing. Just snap.
Harlow · 31-35, F
@Coppercoil Right! That is weird. We do have a lot of woodpeckers. Maybe that weakened the tree?
TexChik · F
Look like it had fungus ( the orangish ) material in the trunk .
Harlow · 31-35, F
@TexChik it was a softwood tree 😮
TexChik · F
@Harlow yep , the orangish stuff looks powdery in you pic. Magnificent back yard btw. 😉
Looks like the trunk was rotting out. Good thing it fell away from the house.
PeterJ · 51-55, M
I bet that was loud
Harlow · 31-35, F
@PeterJ yes
anoderod55 · 61-69, M
Glad it fell away from your house 👍
Starcrossed · 41-45, F
Aww what a shame, it was a nice tree.
Rhode57 · 56-60, M
Get a chainsaw cut the broken end flat and count the rings maybe take a photo of the rings they tell you so much .The closer the rings the drier that year was .Tells you how old the tree is can even give you ideas of weather occurences etc .
ArishMell · 70-79, M
@Rhode57 A large beech was blown down some years ago in woods not far from me.

The forest's management cut the stump flat and fitted it with an acrylic plaque engraved with the rings (to highlight them), their years and a notable human-history event in the more significant years.

So many events we think of as so long ago, while the plant peacefully lived out its 200-300 year span in the Dorset countryside.
HoraceGreenley · 56-60, M
Yup, that's a tree

Wow. Good that it fell away from the house.

The inside of a tree trunk is kinda mesmerising though.
Harlow · 31-35, F
@SW-User ikr, it sounded so close when I heard it fall. I thought for sure it crashed on the deck.

Yeah it’s so cool

looks like one section is bug infested??
scary to hear a tree straining and moaning during hard wind
SW-User
Wow, what caused that??
Harlow · 31-35, F
@SW-User it was really stormy last night

@Stereoguy this happened last year too but in the front yard. It blocked the driveway. A nice neighborhood chainsawed it up for us.

@SW-User Your yard sounds beautiful. I love nature
Harlow · 31-35, F
@SW-User yeah a snap and the swooshing falling sound, accompanied by the rain and wind make an eerie orchestra 😮
