I am so happy I do not live in Europe for this reason. The climate change nonsense and elimination and taxes/caps on fossil fuels are causing your woes. And have been for a long time.
@SomeMichGuy It's not a conspiracy theory, nor is it purely libertarian. How about you actually look it up?

It's a real thing. No conspiracy needed. Keep putting your head in the sand sheep.
@cherokeepatti i paid 30 then 60. On the 1st it will be 100 and next year what? Almost 200??? I dont even use much energy! Its crap. My mom was going to buy us a dryer as a gift and i told her dont bother i wont be able to afford the energy bill. I hope they wont go up another 80 percent next year because this is so ridiculous! I know a recession every so often is normal it helps the economy supposedly but going from 30 to 200 for the same energy use which is not much is ridiculous.
@SomeMichGuy well that sucks 😕 i had to buy my daughter 3.5 tog sleepgros because i dont think we can afford to keep the heat on all winter. I may have to consider moving my family to the US where im from if it doesnt get better
@DarkSideoftheMoon I'm sorry, but what does "3.5 tog sleepgros" mean?
Keep it on, but turn it down.
What sort of heat do you have? Forced-air? Hydronic? Radiant?
I'm not sure what UK laws/reg's are, but modern "wood stoves" are high efficiency (using blowers to get more complete combustion) and can be good alternatives.
I don't know but someone has to pay for all this newer renewable energy that is going rampant throughout the world. To do away with fossil fuels and such is a tremendous undertaking and cost. Climate change has made us re-evaluate our energy standards and unfortunately, we all have to pay for it.
@caesar7 That was always the case, but fools kept denying the obvious trends and even the lesson of the "energy crisis"--staying on petroleum will only keep us susceptible to foreign manipulation of our economy.
Had we slowly been transitioning to renewables since the 1970's, we'd have built up better infrastructure and have tested solutions. Some places/nations have. We have a huge "Not Invented Here" syndrome in the US which means we often aren't wise enough to learn from others' successes & failures.
So here we are...big oil spent its lobbying money well.
