so many colleges take advantage of kids by selling them on degrees that rarely lead to real work, yes there are jobs for all degrees but many pay very little or are few and far between
GeniUs · 56-60, M
My daughter is doing some sort of qual in animal husbandry, they encourage the kids to believe it will lead to jobs such as Vet, veterinary nurse or marine biologist. My daughter is putting her heart into this, doing placements at vets and volunteering (the only one on the course) to help out at an open day they held at the weekend. None of the other kids on the course give a fk.

It's just funny how everyone thinks *their* kid is amazing. Famous artists rarely went to art school haha.
Danez · M
@naoradix: nice.. is she happy? I mean having and raising kids brings a lot of joy to life but sometimes you need a little more to feel fulfilled
naoradix · 36-40, F
@DanGerUs: She's miserable and igores her kids.
Danez · M
@naoradix: that's a dangerous situation for anyone to be in. It's what sometimes sparks affairs.
VioletRayne · 36-40, F
there are such things as graphic designers and such. Going to art school doesn't mean that they'll never find anything to do.
naoradix · 36-40, F
@VioletRayne: Those people aren't artists. They're artisans. An artist works for themselves, not for a mega conglomerate or franchise.
VioletRayne · 36-40, F
the point is they went to art school and are supporting themselves with their degree. Not every one feels like you. Maybe his daughter will be an artisan during the week and an artist on the weekends. you never know @naoradix:
naoradix · 36-40, F
@VioletRayne: True, but any artist that has a day job usually loses their ability to create, faster than those who have the freedom to let their minds wander. It's not something you can command. Working for a company diminishes the ability to create, faster.

I'd take an Art degree over some of the things colleges get away with teaching these day.
naoradix · 36-40, F
The myth is that you can only be an artist if you have a degree. That's how you can tell if someone is an artist or not.
Lot's of artists have degrees and lots don't, In some states you don't need a law degree to be a lawyer you just need to pass the bar exam and apprentice with a law firm.
VioletRayne · 36-40, F
@ImAFreeSpirit: This is true, but federal states the you can't qualify to take the bar unless you've successfully completed a law program. That's how they get you.

When I see someone walking straight towards an abyss, I usually tell them... but I don't think I've ever actually changed anyone's mind. Still, it's like a moral obligation or something. Like the guy who keeps dying in Groundhog Day. Phil knows if he doesn't act, the man WILL die. Strong incentive to try.

My daughter took a three year graphic design course. It destroyed her physically and mentally.

Nah why ruin the surprise?
Thegreateast · 31-35, M
To each their own. It's not our responsibility to decide what is best. We have to let people learn for themselves and make their own choices
Danez · M
Naw... maybe they are wealthy enough that it isn't a concern. Or maybe she'll meet some successful guy one day while painting in Paris that'll marry her and pay her student loans off.
GeniUs · 56-60, M
My older brother is doing an art degree, barely held a job down all his life. (At least he doesn't draw anime). My mother thinks he's amazing, her son at university.
YoMomma ·
No.. People can get jobs even with art degrees.. FYI
naoradix · 36-40, F
Sometimes people with engineering degrees can't get a job FYI.
Ambroseguy80 · 56-60, M
Sure. Tell him
naoradix · 36-40, F
They've been talking for a long time. If I said something at this point I would look like a weirdo. I'm on the other side of the room.
