I'm Facepalming

Every time a person says : "But we are carnivores, we need meat to live" is when an insufferable desire to facepalm and roll my eyes appears.

You are actually incorrect. This planet can certainly sustain more humans. People focus so much on saying how overpopulation is a serious problem (and I completely agree on that, this world would be a much safer and better place with half of the population it has now and with this modern way of living, consumerism it certainly is the biggest issue) but a lot of people fail to see that there is a way to support this number of people by feeding them sustainable diets. It takes an obscene amount of water and food (corn, rice, soy...) to make 1lb of meat but if you actually use that amount of energy on focusing on feeding the starving people around the globe we wouldn't be having this problem and a lot of people would be healthier and less overweight the other very important thing to be mentioned is that we would save 130million acres of forest and about 137 plant and animal species. . The most important thing, we would reduce the pollution and probably save ourselves from ourselves.

@Originalme - LOL I wasn't trying to say fish aren't animals. I was just making the distinction that fish is very different from animals that live on land (red meat especially)
Originalme · 26-30, F
I understand that but I was just stating that because people might not know what I'm trying to accentuate here. I really find it silly when someone says that to me because I have no idea where they got the idea that we are carnivorous animals xD
I wasn't addressing people who eat animals(even though I think animal products are very unhealthy, unethical and unsustainable) just people who say dumb things like this but those are usually people who instead of reading scientific articles about Global warming and greenhouse gasses put "bacon" in every comment section. :)

@GoneRogue I admire your answers and you somehow always menage to make me feel better. I shouldn't be focusing so much on the negatives but in our society where not enough people are aware and educated on what's happening, I can't help but feel frustrated and pessimistic. I hate when situations like this happen because the anger gets the best of me and that doesn't really help the cause. Thank you for your encouraging and comforting reply! :)

@b4w Those are not ideas, those are facts!!!! Oh my god I can't believe there are people like you who don't do any amount of research and then comment dumb things like this. And both your and @carpediem's responses are just so immature, I'm surrounded by ignorant people like you in real life and that's what makes me want to stay at home and never get out but it looks like there's a bunch of you on the Internet as well. I don't usually insult others but when I see people like you I realize how much is wrong with the world. There are numerous species going extinct, people starving and dying of starvation, animals being hunted down and killed for pleasure and amusement and then there are dumbasses like you practically joking about that. This is why I turned into a misanthrope because majority of people live in denial and won't face the facts, won't take the responsibility and won't make a change for the better cause. I can't believe I let ignorant and immature people like you get to me and your disinterest about the future of the planet annoy me.
GoneRogue · 51-55, M
@Originalme don't let these guys get to you, don't let people discourage you. These people force you to think about why you believe in your convictions and will only make you stronger in the end. This world needs people like you who are willing to stand up for what's right and don't turn a blind eye to the problems that determine the future. So don't give up!
Originalme · 26-30, F
@GoneRogue I wasn't referring to you. There are a lot of people who don't consider fish to be meat, for example Christians (Orthodox), when they fast, they abstain from all animal products but they still eat fish because they don't consider it an animal product which is, in my opinion ridiculous. It's like they think fish grows on trees. :D
Originalme · 26-30, F
Well, people are too worried about being politically correct and addressing"more important issues". I mean who cares if the environment becomes too toxic to support any life? What if we and our simple greedy minds destroy this planet and all of its beauty? I care about what next dumb thing the Kardashian's are going to say! @jonathan
GoneRogue · 51-55, M
@Originalme I'm impressed by your comments. You're a very smart young lady. I don't agree with everything you say but I certainly agree that the modern way of living is a big problem. The way we consume is a problem but the way we produce is a much much bigger problem. A change of diet isn't going to bring about the significant change that the world needs. In my view it's not so much what we do/eat/use that's the problem but how we do/eat/use the resources we have. (Big) companies need to produce in a way that is sustainable and non taxing to the environment. But the biggest companies want a monopoly position where they can act as if they are god. It's all about money and control. And they don't care by what means they achieve this.

Fortunately people are slowly starting to wake up and recognize that we can't allow these companies to continue down this path.

Sorry for replying late!
@Sunshine there are different types of vegetarians ovo (eggs) vegetarians, lacto (milk) vegetarians and pescatarians. You can also combine the first two and you get an ovo-lacto vegetarian (they eat both milk and eggs). Usually pescatarians are not considered to be vegetarians because they eat animal flesh ( yes, fish are animals they don't grow on trees as many people seem to think xD ) and you have vegans (they completely abstain from animal products and by-products) for ethical and environmental reasons.

I can recall the news last week sharing for 30 minutes a story about Justin Bieber in the park with no shoes on. That's what people care about.
Jonathan · 31-35, M
Speaking of climate change, people should take a good look at Venus. That'll be Earth one day.
black4white · 56-60, M
Btw ...I think you are the incorrect one but we all have our ideas :) this is a fun conversation
black4white · 56-60, M
hhmmm....you know the problem is not the animals the problem is over population by humans. This planet (mother EARTH) can not sustain 7 BILLION plus people, to me this is where the problems lie. NOW i could be totally wrong and off base and it wont be the first time but all the negativity of animals...multiply by 1548 or more hehehe and you will just begin to have the impact of the humans to animal ratio.
GoneRogue · 51-55, M
@Sunshine that's okay, no problem. I'm wrong plenty of times too.
carpediem · 61-69, M
Reading all this is making me hungry. Surf and turf anyone?
Jonathan · 31-35, M
My original comment was basically an "I agree with you" statement.
GoneRogue · 51-55, M
@Sunshine land animals and sea animals are different categories. Especially when talking about them as food, being vegetarian or vegan. Although fish & seafood is a source of protein like meat, it is different than meat from animals that live on land. Vegetarians exclude meat from their diet but do eat fish/seafood. Vegans don't eat any animal products at all.
GoneRogue · 51-55, M
They think they know … but they really have no idea. 😁
Sunshine · 26-30, F
I'll just wait for Originalme to chime in.
Sunshine · 26-30, F
GoneRogue, I was wrong. I'm sorry :(
Originalme · 26-30, F
@Jonathan the key word here is " carnivores" if someone was living on a carnivorous diet he would most likely die in a matter of months. Tigers are carnivores I can't believe that they don't know the difference between carnivore, omnivore and an herbivore.
Originalme · 26-30, F
@Black I'm more concerned with the negative impact animal agriculture has on the environment than health, but however I do think that a vegan lifestyle is the most optimal for our health and the betterment of the environmental crisis that we, as a whole are about to face.
black4white · 56-60, M
@Original and your point is :-) LOL

I know and yes you are right...just like everything else in life has to be an equal balance to get all the proteins and etc etc etc that the body/mind/soul needs... OR at least one would thing but that is the basis of this conversation :-)
Originalme · 26-30, F
*stabs you* xD
kingofthenorth87 · 36-40, M
But we need to eat the animals. cause if we don't, the will multiply and multiply, to the point where they will start eating our food just to survive! Thus we need to thin their numbers for the safebeeing of humanity!
Originalme · 26-30, F
@Black I think that it will cause a lot of health problems for a person that eats that way. Since you are asking for my opinion, I would say it is highly unsustainable, unhealthy and unethical. :)
GoneRogue · 51-55, M
@Sunshine. There are different groups of vegetarians that are more or less strict about what they eat. So yes it can get pretty confusing.
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
I would like to be a vegetarian for numerous reasons but I find being anemic and the iron not absorbing well unless I eat some animal protein very challenging.
black4white · 56-60, M
Ummm that was really rude of us you know we owe this to Original...she is definitely invited and if she only wants a salad I am sure we can accommodate :)
black4white · 56-60, M
Okay what about being an omnivore but HEAVILY on the meat side. :-) each plate is 80% meat 20% veggies and fillers... hehehehe
Jonathan · 31-35, M
Some people do just fine without meat. I enjoy meat, but I'm no more healthy than anyone that doesn't. Although, humans are animals.
Sunshine · 26-30, F
Gone, you see I'm clueless. I thought vegetarians considered seafood as a no-no. Now I know 3 things. :)
GoneRogue · 51-55, M
@sunshine clams are not meat, it falls into the fish category.
Jonathan · 31-35, M
Are you suggesting that I don't know the difference?
Originalme · 26-30, F
They really don't. It's sad what this world is turning into. :(
carpediem · 61-69, M
@B4W Indeed, 12 OZ charbroiled filet with a 1.5 lb lobster. Yummy.
Sunshine · 26-30, F
Gone, fish is not meat? I mean, I know it's not like a cow but...
carpediem · 61-69, M
@b4w Agreed. After all, don't want to be face palmed.
But men are carnivores, we need meat to live. XD
Originalme · 26-30, F
No, I wasn't suggesting that. I said ''they''.
black4white · 56-60, M
Pick me and I want a hella good steak
Widower1 · 41-45, M
what does face palm mean?
Sunshine · 26-30, F
But clams is so yummy :(
