How cheap can you be??

My parents raised a family during The Depression so please excuse my mother's habit of washing toothpicks for re-use... 🫣

An old Dutch couple used to visit my home when I was a kid. They bought one tea bag with them and went on and on about it. First, it was dipped on his cup, then hers, then my Granny's cup. Then she would place it aside, saying it could be reused once dried out. When they'd filled their bellies up they'd leave and call out as they did "dont forget to use the teabag again as it is quality tea".

@meggie You laugh but my aunt worked as a nurse in a children GI clinic and she used to dip a teabag into hot water the same way and allegedly people were coming back to her asking what kind of tea she used because they really liked it. 😂 Now..I'm not sure if se used one teabag for multiple cups though.

My mother refused to throw out the small pieces of ivory soap. She collected them in a big empty ice cream container and it sat under the bathroom sink for years. One day I threw it out and she never even noticed it was gone

She also wouldn’t throw out old spices in jars. We literally laughed that she’d had stuff from the 1950’s

@Jenny1234 Our parents must be related.
My grandfather was so cheap, he owned one light bulb and carried it from room to room.

Nothing is gonna top the light bulb one - still laughing here 🤣
@RenFur Sorry, I’ll be going now. Don’t forget to tip the veal and try the waitress. 👍
@OlderSometimesWiser There have been so many times I wanted to try the waitress

How about buying generic cereal and putting it in the name brand box.
whowasthatmaskedman · 70-79, M
@Adrift I saw that once on "Roseanne".😷

@whowasthatmaskedman My kids used to call me Julius after everyone hates chris because I bought the butter thumb brands.

My mother would bring the almost empty ketchup bottles down to the basement, turn them upside down, and let the dregs slowly drip into another container to make sure we got every last drop.

@RenFur My sister and I still laugh about it, but my mother was brought up during the depression with no father. She knew the value of a dollar.

@eli1601

My mother raised 3 girls fully and one girl half way through said Great Depression. You don't forget an experience like that!

I'm sure you have more to say, too - - - there were countless ways to save money like making sure no lid from a can still had an atom of food that wasn't scraped off into the pot LOL
Adrift · 61-69, F
@eli1601 Yep, my mom used to put water in the ketchup bottles when they were almost empty.

My parents grew up during the depression and they were pretty resourceful.
Cleaning out their house once they passed was no easy task.

We used to make jokes about my mother knitting bacon rinds into socks..😷
RenFur · 70-79, M
@whowasthatmaskedman

Bacon rinds... lol, I remember those. Same for white margarine that came with orange coloring you had to knead in (if you were of a mind to do so).
