Why is it a problem for primary aged pupils to do PE in underwear? It was de rigeur in past years
Anthony2 · 51-55, M
@Oldmanjimbo all gone pc mad now,,,
Oldmanjimbo · 90-99, M
@Anthony2 I'm not sure whether it has much to do with political correctness
LikeMind · M
@Oldmanjimbo our teacher was the worst one ever for forgetting his kit, many times he has held class in his underwear…

AndreaNewLife · 36-40, F
We did exercises (nothing as grand as gym) just in vest and knickers and bare feet. Why not?
AndreaNewLife · 36-40, F
@Justme264 Depended on who we were, repeat offending etc, but we had to take a note home, and each parent responded differently, but always strictly
Justme264 · 70-79, M
@AndreaNewLife i must go but hope we can speak more
Justme264 · 70-79, M
@AndreaNewLife sorry... back now for a while..... so your school never dealt with the matter at hand.... always left it to parebts?

You seem to be describing my memory of Mrs McKenzie! A peripatetic teacher who played on the piano once a week and taught us Scottish dancing!
As Oscar Wilde said:
“Everything should be experienced, with the exception of incest and folk dancing”!
Lol

@lancashirelady50 Did she wear vest and pants for Scottish country dancing too or just the pupils?
SunshineGirl · 36-40, F
I did at my state primary school and when I started boarding school. I think it was just easier all round changing wise. Nobody questioned it.

Scottish country dancing? Whoever put that on the curriculum must have been the same person who made us dance around a maypole 🤣
Justme264 · 70-79, M
It did not bother me at the time - I just thought it might feel strange for the girls - I guess we were all far to young to worry or care!

We did this in the infants and it didn't bother us much 😟

I would of thought a pair of shorts or better still a kilt would of made more sense for country dancing although when it came to PE 'in underwear' was the "and don't thank forgetting your kit gets you out of it" card the sports teacher played.
Justme264 · 70-79, M
@CatFan10 I would have loved the girls to have been dancing in their kilts rather than how they were made to appear.....!
Justme264 · 70-79, M
thank you for the heart

That mantra was adhered to by my P.E. teacher in senior school too.
Surprising how often he forget his..... @CatFan10

devonman · 61-69, M
I hated it too .
Justme264 · 70-79, M
@devonman did not seem the best way to spend the day!
devonman · 61-69, M
@Justme264 think it was when it was rainy and we couldn’t do sport outside
I can still hear the shitty music from the
Big old gramophone . Only got interesting in final year at primary when some of the girls started growing boobs . Lol😂

@Justme264 Yes, you should have been taught English dancing too! Wasn't there a big craze in the 1960s-70s for dances based on Scots traditions, thanks to TV shows like The White Heather Club?

It should also be remembered that at one time, being to dance, sing or play a musical instrument reasonably well, did carry genuine social advantages and some personal cachet; so the dancing in schools may have reflected that. The teachers too, probably thought it would be more fun than just formal PE exercises.

Also of course, music transcends boundaries so there is no reason why English dancers, musicians or audiences cannot perform or enjoy Scots, Welsh or Irish styles, and vice-versa. Or perhaps we'd better bar Debussy, Beethoven and Copeland from British concert halls (French, German and American respectively).
Justme264 · 70-79, M
@ArishMell Absoluely right.... music can trancend all boundaries....
