snail glued to a specimen card in the British Museum mid-1800s. It spent four years glued there before scientists realized it was still alive.

@Degbeme our answer.

snail was indeed glued to a specimen card at the British Museum in the mid-1800s and remained alive for four years because it entered a state of "aestivation," a form of suspended animation where it retreated deep into its shell, allowing it to survive extreme conditions like dryness and heat with minimal activity, essentially going dormant until conditions improved, which happened when it was eventually noticed and rehydrated by scientists.

After several years, museum staff noticed a slight movement of the shell and realized the snail was alive.

Care after discovery:
The snail was carefully removed from the card and placed in a suitable environment where it lived for an additional period
Is there anything the British Museum won't take and display? 🥲
