Our grade 10 Physics teacher told us Earth would be the size of a softball considering the "empty space" idea. I love mind-stretchers like this.

I try to use that theory when hitting a golf ball through the branches of the tree. It always seems to miss the empty space and hit something solid.

I still never got my head around that. A coffee table is mostly empty space, but you can still bark your shins on one.

@Mamapolo2016 Mostly empty space by volume, but the table's parts are held together by chemical bonds...so bonds created by sharing electrons (seemingly point particles!) create the sense of surface / solidity / strength which we experience.
Metals (including mixtures) crystallize into regular arrays which are regular and strong.
Woods are complex, fibrous, but still bio-chemicals.
And Rosemary Woods' foot-operated recording machine was infamous. 😉
