I like to study
I have been having discussions in my classes about diversity and ethics, and one thing that often bothers me is how quickly people form opinions based on their own experiences, observations, and emotions.
The problem is that our individual experiences represent only a very small part of reality. Without evidence, research, and enough data, what feels true to us may actually be a bias or misconception that does not reflect the larger picture.
Before science, people often explained what they observed through emotion and belief because they had no reliable way to test their explanations. This helped lead early civilizations to create supernatural explanations, such as sun gods and moon gods, for things they could see but did not yet understand.
The scientific method gives us a better way to test what we think we know. We ask a question, form a hypothesis, collect evidence while controlling outside factors, and analyze whether the results support what we believed. We also have to consider sample size and whether the people or cases studied actually represent the larger population. Without that, even a large amount of data can give us a misleading picture.
In class and in everyday life, I often see people enter conversations with only a vague understanding of a subject but very strong feelings about it. That can be frustrating, especially as I continue learning about different topics. Personal experience and emotion have value, but they are only one part of reality. I think we should be willing to look beyond what we personally see and feel, examine the evidence, and ask whether what we believe actually holds up.
