He Did It Again….Fixed The Heat Unit…

And did it before he drove to Vo-Tech this morning. He was about 30 minutes late but his teacher understood. I told him that it was hands-on experience.

Cute story from a couple of years ago. I was looking after my son's house while he was working out of town. One day I noticed the house was cold so I checked the furnace. The pilot light was out. I re lit it and warmed the house up. I checked the next day and the furnace was out again. I phoned a furnace repair company but the young tech they sent over had nary a clue as to what was wrong with the furnace. After he left I took off the thermocoupler drove to a store picked up a new one and had the house warm for the rest of the winter. The young tech knew all about the new furnaces which are prone to break down but had zero experience on the old furnaces because they very rarely break down. I'm not a furnace tech but I do know how the old furnaces work so I should have saved the young fellow the trip over.

@cherokeepatti My son's place was built in the late 1960s. The one in our house has been working since 1958.

@hippyjoe1955 Depends on the brand. I’ve heard that the a/c units that they replaced the old ones with won’t last half or a third as long as the old ones did. We had two record heat waves in 2011 and 2012 and it took its toll on a/c units. I was working at Walmart and they were selling window units like crazy because some didn’t have the money to replace the big outside unit.

@cherokeepatti Yes the newer furnaces are very complicated because of all the electronic wizardry in them. Very very efficient but one little speck of dust in the wrong spot and the furnace doesn't work. I was at a friend's house one night when her furnace quit working. 6 hands on type of guys all looked at it and had no solution. Fortunately she had a fireplace that worked so she was able to keep her house warmish until the furnace guy showed up a day or two later. My old furnace broke down 6 years ago and I simply replaced the motor with one I kept for just in case. The furnace It took me about 5 minutes with a 1/2 inch wrench and a set of Allan keys to get it back up and running.

Does he know why it broke down again? I thought Ray sent away for replacement doo-hickeys...you know the ones the boy had to buff out with a dollar bill?

Regardless, he is a VERY talented kid, and he takes VERY good care of you!

@4meAndyou The furnace is old. He said what is wrong with it, there was a small hose that went to the part and it got gummed up. He got that taken care of but needs to get the part to replace the thing the hose goes to. He said they sell the part online for $20, he will try to find it in a store not too far away.

@cherokeepatti You NOW have a resident EXPERT living with you!!! You should write to his Vo-tech teacher and tell him about all the extra credit work the boy is doing!!!

@4meAndyou His grandpa told him to go get some lunch at a restaurant. He fills his card so he can use it. Told me it was because they didn’t have leftovers at work. I think it was his little way of paying him back because if anyone came out to do what he did there would have been a decent bill.

Is what you call a heat unit what I would call a furnace or ????? I have never heard that term used before.
