Canberra.
The easy way to remember this is that HMAS Canberra was sunk during the Battle of Savo Island (scuttled after heavy damage). Canberra was one of only two large cruisers in the Australian Navy, HMAS Australia being the other.

The U.S. would later name one of its new Baltimore-class heavy cruisers after Canberra, the only ship in the U.S. Navy to have been named after a foreign capital.

Thanks. @beckyromero

i thought it was sydney mainly because i was never taught and knew that sydney was very large, i believed that until i took a geography class and we spent a substantial amount of time on australia and talked about why they set canberra as the capital

I do but then I do live here.. XD
NigelDoes · 56-60, M
Yes. Canberra.
bijouxbroussard · F
@NigelDoes That is interesting. It does seem like it would be one of the better known (internationally) cities like Sydney or Melbourne.
NigelDoes · 56-60, M
@bijouxbroussard Exactly.
walabby · M
@bijouxbroussard It was Melbourne for the first three decades, until they purpose built Canberra.. An American actually designed the city. Burley Griffen, I think...
Walter Burley Griffin, actually..

I know this, it was a city I thought it wasn’t. Cranberry or something.
Gingerbreadspice · F
@SW-User I know but it’s something like that.

SW-User
@SW-User No not really. Going by some of the answers here anything is possible

SW-User
@SW-User Err...yeah, unfortunately, you're right.
Holdontothefire · 26-30, M
I do not. I mean the only two places anyone cared to teach us are Melbourne and Sydney. I only picked up a few others from talking to people, and have literally never heard someone identify the capital.
idlethoughts · 56-60, M
it's not surprising many people think it's Sydney. Sydney is the oldest & currently most populous city.
It's much the same as many thinking New York City is the capital of New York state

I’ll say, Sydney, off the top of my head, but I’m wrong as I checked the comments. At least I’m honest. 😉
Mamapolo2016 · F
I do know, but only because I had an Australian penpal who cleared up that question for me.
DragonFruit · 61-69, M
I actually learned before I realized that it wasn’t like Sydney or Melbourne from a cultural standpoint.
Melbourne was the capital prior to Canberra being built.
Similar to the US, where the original capital was New York City until George Washington donated land for the present capital city of Washington, D.C. (District of Columbia).

At first I thought it was Sydney until my dad told me it was Canberra lol. I was mind-blown.

But it’s something I should know 😂

Sorry we had to get rid of our capital from California.

It's not the one you immediately expect.
So uh, not Sidney.
Canberra maybe? It's like Ottawa is the capital of Canada rather than Toronto.

greenmountaingal · 80-89, F
I guessed Canberra, but wasn't sure so I looked it up. Bingo! Tourists never seem to go there for some reason.
walabby · M
@greenmountaingal Good reason. It's a weird place.
Canberra but I was surprised when I learned that myself.

SW-User
@Existentially Which one did you think it was? Sydney? Because apparently this is what most people think.
@SW-User Yes, Sydney.
Quizzical · 46-50, M
Most folks think it's Sydney, but I know the truth, lol

SW-User
@Quizzical I believed Sydney is the largest one? Probably why everyone gets confused.
Quizzical · 46-50, M
@SW-User Sydney is by all accounts the cultural centre of Australia, whereas the 'other city' is mostly government buildings etc, and holds little interest for tourists.

Well, as an American, I wouldn't expect people from around the world to know what our capital city is.
lovecatsnothumans · 31-35, F
@SW-User Why would anyone care about the capital of other countries if they don't plan on going there? It's unnecessary. I'm pretty sure there are ignorant people from every country, not just America. People are humans, humans are sometimes ignorant about things.
Quizzical · 46-50, M
@lovecatsnothumans It's just general knowledge, things you pick up by just being alive and having an interest in the world around you.

SW-User
@lovecatsnothumans There's this thing called knowledge, I don't know 🤷 How are you supposed to form and express an opinion on politics or racism, for example,when you don't really know what you're referring to?
