Should students be assigned more reading homework in school?

If so, how much? If not, do you think there are other ways they should be encouraged to read more, or do you think students already read enough?

@SW-User Starting at what age?
SW-User
In elementary it should be at least 20 minutes, middle school 45 minutes and high school at least the whole hour. @33person

@SW-User I had the boy reading for an hour since 2nd grade. The teacher said an hour, I gave him a kitchen timer to time himself while he was reading. He uses his Ipad alarm now.

That’s great😀I honestly think reading is important and should be taught at an early age. I tried teaching my kids about classical music and art at an early age but my ex wife said I was being too harsh.. @cherokeepatti

@SW-User My daughter told me when she was in 5th grade orchestra that classical music calmed her down. I had a book about music and intelligence and it helps with creativity, math, art, etc.

If you play it for them when they’re babies/toddlers they do develop a love for it and it does help with creativity and an appreciation for the arts. My ex wife would say “let them be kids and leave them be”.. I made them do reading, math, and they had to pick one composer or artist and write a short essay on their music/art and what inspired them. @cherokeepatti

@SW-User I’ve read where some convenience store owners had problems with groups of young people hanging out behind their stores and spray-painting graffiti, etc. on it. They wanted to make it not just a good place to hang out so they put loudspeakers outside and played classical music. They stopped hanging out there.

I believe it..@cherokeepatti

@SW-User I used it at work one time when the young high-school kids wanted to blast hard rock music so loud us older women were getting headaches. The supervisor said we had to take turns listening to each other’s music for the entire day, so she wrote down our names & our favorite radio stations...I said Classical & gave the station number. At the end of the day that it was my turn, the girl that brought the boom box said it was broken, took it home, and never brought it back. Funny how that happened so quickly.
