Can a thumb drive USB overheat and wreck itself?

I was just downloading some anime unto a 64 gb thumb drive and it was quite hot to touch.

Never heard of one breaking that way but some of them can get hot enough to burn you. Tends to happen especially with the really tiny nano sized ones.
