No. A thesis is in many cases a demonstration of the capabilities of the student. The thesis itself does not necessarily have to have real world applications. If that were the case then there would be no PhDs awarded for theoretical mathematics until physicists or applied mathematiciansor found a use for it. And no PhDs in physics for the physics of black holes.
