Should a thesis always have a practical use?

ninalanyon · 61-69, T
No. A thesis is in many cases a demonstration of the capabilities of the student. The thesis itself does not necessarily have to have real world applications. If that were the case then there would be no PhDs awarded for theoretical mathematics until physicists or applied mathematiciansor found a use for it. And no PhDs in physics for the physics of black holes.

You'd think so, wouldn't you? Anything for that degree though.

@raysam363 Well, psychology of haptics in that case

@scooogy I was able to look it up because I was in the department. All they did was use established research. It was more of a review than a new thesis. Not sure if it was enough though, graduated before then.

@raysam363 I heard of a student's thesis in architecture, a research on whether or not a certain place in the streets would be qualified for changing it to roundabout traffic.
