How much independent reading do you think should be required in high school?

Specifically, for English class

enough to make you stop asking this question

Sustained independent reading is essential, especially for college prep. But for an actual amount is not in my thoughts important. I think the focus should be on the genre/literature type, period in literature or the author themselves. By this point students are reading to learn and not learning to read...time amounts are not the focus. Focus on the standards or objectives

If it's required, it's not really independent.
A lot. It can even replace high school entirely.

@LittleBlueAngelBoy How about if we're insisting on working within the current system?
@33person I don't know. A book a week, maybe.

What does independent reading mean?

@SW-User The entire class is not reading the particular book, but individual students read the bok for homework, basically, and write a book report or something.

I don’t know. I think we had three (2 hard and one easy) books a semester. That seemed reasonable at the time.

(This was 20+ years ago so I’m having trouble remembering)
