In your own personal opinion, how much independent reading should be required of high school students?

What do you mean by independent reading?

@CrazyMusicLover Good question. Basically, I mean reading in addition to that which is read in class. For example, a class may spend 3 weeks studying the book To Kill a Mockingbird and study maybe 1-2 books, at most, like that per quarter. But independent reading would be reading they do in addition to that on their own, either with required or self-selected materials.

@33person Oh, we hardly read anything in class. Almost all required literary works were meant to be read at home and we only had exams about them. We had around 42 works for 4 years. Various works including poetry and short stories. It was manageable but many students cheated and learned only the synopsis anyway. You can't really avoid them as they are a part of the final exam that is equal for every single high school student in the country.
