In your own personal opinion, how much independent reading should be required of high school students?

A lot, and none of those snippets or tldr stuff, long academic papers, literature, quantity, because they have time, they can shift through perspectives and find an angle that interests them, then go for depth as they get older. No more life crisis.

@es0tericus That seems great, tbh. How much reading would students have to do per week in one class, roughly?

@33person come to think of it, in a classroom environment.. The most effective use of time, prioritizing knowledge sharing, would be where the students view the classroom as an outlet to share their understanding of what they read in their own time. Meaning, they should be independent learners and the classes should provide them with a means to verify their thought process or develop their perspectives.

But I digress. I would say if a more traditional route is opted for, balance would help, meaning 50% hours reading 50% hours teaching/discussing. Kinda need more information to give a better answer, sorry.
