Yes I do in the days corporal punishment exists in school. It worked kids was better behaved and overall more respectful
Perhaps, but as pointed out, PC is all around and it can be a major cause of going against what once were considered "normal" values and actions.@marriedplus3

I don’t really agree with today’s world anyway. But oh well @soar2newhighs

@marriedplus3 I don't always agree with today's world, but I teach. There is too much solid research backing anti CP. I rarely even yell at my students. that being said, if my mouth won't say it, my face will!

The problem is there are no consequences at home for many kids. That being said, parents do the best they can.

i wish we could just let kids fail in middle and hs. Natural consequences.
@thedoctorisin And many have stories of abuse that weren’t talked about back then. Those are the childhood memories we gloss over now.

@thedoctorisin I was rarely spanked. Only 3 swats over clothes with a hand. I got grounded or lost privileges.

When were the olden days? In my parents' generation, the teachers could hit the kids and he or she could expect the same at home. In mine, corporal punishment was verboten in schools - and it depended on the individual kid and teacher if you had trouble or not. Some of the teachers I had were old ladies who insulted or humiliated you in the front of the class. Some just shouldn't have been teachers - they grabbed kids by the hair and yelled at them loud enough for the other classrooms full of kids to hear.

Which was worse? Grounding has been around since Year One - but some kids don't comply with it anyway, and sneak out and violate the order.
Eeyore122 · 36-40, F
I physically couldn't sneak out, and it depended. My mom got in chore moods, so if she was in one of those at the time of my grounding, I got extra. I resented this. Spanking hit my conscience especially. As did yelling.

You sound like my older sister. I mentioned "sneaking out" because she did that a couple of times when Mom went out and she was in charge of the younger three. Of course, there was the devil to pay when Mom came home and found us in charge of ourselves. Then came the yelling and the additional grounding.

My friend, who I didn't see often, and whose mom had driven him, as he doesn't, surprised me at home once when I was babysitting. In my excitement, I went out with him. BUT I DID leave mine and my friend's cell phone numbers with my siblings. You can guess how well that went over with my mother...
MaryJanine · 61-69, F
I can guess...like a lead balloon. My sister, who was 16 at the time, got spanked for the first time in years when she missed curfew and, when she came in, changed her story four times about where she had been, who with, and what she was doing. Mom didn't take lies or talking back from ANY of us.
Eeyore122 · 36-40, F
I lost out on going on a canoe trip with a new group of scouting friends for that stunt.
MaryJanine · 61-69, F
Your mom knew what would hurt you more than any spanking.
Eeyore122 · 36-40, F
Right. As I told people, just because my butt was spared compared to what many got, doesn't mean I got off the hook totally for stunts.

I'm sorry - I don't believe you,marriedplus3. When I went to public school, spanking was verboten (although it was okay when my mom and dad were in school). We were never struck by teachers or administrators, and a few today don't know their own strength. Where does spanking leave off and beating begin? Have you seen the newsreels with teachers who got carried away manhandling a discipline problem? Kids DIE from that humiliating nonsense.

If parents believe in it (although I don't) corporal punishment belongs in the home, from Mom or Dad, administered behind closed doors, and don't get carried away. A teacher is too much of a virtual stranger (sorry, Eeyore) to administer a paddling.

There was a 16-year-old honor student in Ohio a few years ago who got into a fight with another girl. The second one was suspended and the honor student was given the choice of a paddling or three-day suspension. She was carrying a double classload and didn't want to miss three days. She chose the paddle. The teacher who hit her with the paddle hit her once - just once - but so hard she had a huge blood blister across her entire bottom that lasted a couple of months.

This is why I don't believe in school spankings.
