Do you think corporal punishment should be reinstated in schools?

No. Public schools in Chicago had banned it in 1950 - before I began school. There was about maybe a dozen years between stopping in public schools and finally stopping in Catholic school (we had three such schools within a four block radius). Public or private or parochial, it's NEVER a good idea. Let the parents do it, if they agreed in it - and there seems to be fewer and fewer of these every day.

@MaryJanine 1950 was a long time before I was born.

I was born about five years after that. (January,1955). But I know that Chicago Public Schools voted about that time to eliminate corporal punishment in the public schools, but parochial schools still used the physical punishment a few years longer. The individual schools decided for themselves when to eliminate them. They didn't all do it at once.

@MaryJanine Why was it eliminated anyway? Most of my friends think, and I'm inclined to agree with them, that it was because they found out we were enjoying it and they didn't want us to enjoy it. What do you think, MJ? Do you believe that is true?

Some kids (and I was one of them) are shy and nervous and didn't want to be bent over by a virtual stranger (teacher or nun)to be paddled. It was bad enough when mom or dad did it.Most parents mine among them) didn't want anyone but THEM to administer discipline. I can still hear my mom saying, "If any teacher TOUCHES my kid, I'll kill him (or her)".

Some administrators and teachers are too strong for their own good. They don't know where "spanking" ends and "beating"begins. The younger the kid, the easier it is to injure him or her. Just recently, I saw on the news where a teacher kicked a reluctant student in her bottom - hard enough to knock her over. Thank God, no bones were broken. But the teacher was fired.

@MaryJanine You seem to be seeing it from a sadistic (i.e. teacher's) point of view rather than a masochistic (i.e. pupil's) point of view. I still suspect that was the real reason they stopped doing it, because masochistic pupils were enjoying it.

@chrisCA What do you think, Chris? Do you think I'm right? An unusually large number of my friends think I am.

@HeadGirl I don't have that experience, but I am sure some of the other students who witnessed it may have enjoyed it.

@chrisCA I'm not talking about the students who witnessed it. I'm talking about the ones who enjoyed being spanked, the ones who liked the physical feel of it.

@HeadGirl Yes. As odd as it may sound, some may have.

@chrisCA There is a popular belief, and I'm sure it's more than just a rumour, that it was stopped for spiteful reasons because the powers-that-be didn't think it was right for masochistic pupils to enjoy it. Until I can find evidence that I am wrong and there was another rational reason I will continue to suspect that and so will my friends.
