How much should we teach* as opposed to letting people learn from experience?

*by teach, not only in school but also preach someone in life how something is bad instead of letting them feel the consequences

I would only presume to teach or advise a child, seriously, unless I was being asked for advice. I assume an adult knows what he or she is doing until they prove otherwise.
