What's more important for a successful career in a subject, marks or mastery?

Are they mutually exclusive?
I would say mastery
SW-User
Neither ... a career is irrelevant ... it is the amount of wealth you accumulate that counts

@questionWeaver So what does it take to accumulate a lot of wealth? Mastering a skill, subject or trade?
@Dobsdobs none of the above

It takes judgement, investment, management and faith

Skills and word of mouth how good you are at your work
Dobsdobs · 46-50, M
@nedkelly But word of mouth often depends on your ability to interact well with people. So is it people skills that matter the most in the end?
nedkelly · 61-69, M
@Dobsdobs People skills are very important, I am booked out for people to see me by word of mouth and the ability to get things done
Seriously depends on the job but usually mastery as long as you can prove it.
It’s not what you know it’s who you know

These days a lot of jobs want a Bachelors degree just to get an interview.. So if you don't have those marks you don't even get to the starting gate
Dobsdobs · 46-50, M
@whowasthatmaskedman So marks gets you there and mastery keeps you there? Both equally important?
whowasthatmaskedman · 70-79, M
I suppose, Yes.. But different. Marks are your ticket of entry to the game. Mastery is how you play when you get on the court. I should specify this is for white collar work. If you have a trade then there is no substitute to learning to think with your fingers as an apprentice.@Dobsdobs
