Why is Arkansas pronounced `Arkansaw`? Conversely, why isn`t it spelled `Arkansaw` if they want to pronounce it that way?

Why is Worchester, MA pronounced "Wooster"? Why isn't it pronounced like Dorchester or Rochester? Or why aren't the latter two pronounced like the former?

@SW-User I don`t know. I didn`t think Worcester had a `h` in either the spelling or pronunciation.

@revenant Leicester is pronounced `Lester`. If it was spelled that way it would be only one letter away from `Lister`.
