I started watching "Making Manson" on Peacock…

It’s about his beginnings, in his own words from recorded phone calls in prison. Some former cellmates, former cult members recounted experiences with him. It was mind-blowing how old they all were.

Most of them finally understood that he had not been a positive influence in their lives. But some of them, almost 60 years later, are still making excuses for him (reminds me of another situation). It’s funny, but I was a kid living in SF during the Summer of Love and remember when all of that was going on.

Manson and his cult were ultimately pretty sick. But a lot of people found him as kids who were vulnerable and just looking to be a part of something profound back then. 🥺

I'm surprised how many artists were fascinated by him. Always when I stumble upon some reference to him, fans go insane in the comment section and say things like: "Manson was misunderstood" or "he wasn't the one who killed" or "despite what happened, he was a smart man with many correct insights about the world ".

Frankly, I never studied the topic but I heard enough that these things give me ick. Just as hearing a sample of him singing in one of my favorite songs.
@CrazyMusicLover I look at the fact that people today romanticize all kinds of people who were considered evil in their own time. Hitler. Manson. And then I look at our recent election and am not as surprised. Apparently this is just who we’ve become. 😔

I wonder if that's John Paul's new film ? I've been fascinated with the Manson mythos for many moons.
There's no case quite like it. I've talked to many who were around that scene back then. (shudder)
@dubkebab It’s a docuseries, actually, with three parts and directed by someone named Billie Mintz.
(was there ever a time he didn’t look crazy ?)

Yes I forget but I've seen many interviews with one member of the Manson family that is repentant (Leslie VonHouton)but there are others who are still the same 60 years later!
@JimboSaturn That any of them came up for parole has always bothered me. They were originally sentenced to death—with those sentences commuted to life imprisonment. And that’s what they should’ve ultimately received. Nobody facing a death sentence should ever be freed unless they’ve been exonerated. And none of them were. The victims are still dead, and the killers still guilty. 😞

Angela Lansbury moved her family across the pond after her daughter started talking about Manson and hanging out with that cult.

“It started with cannabis but moved on to heroin. There were factions up in the hills above Malibu that were dedicated to deadly pursuits,” Lansbury said. “It pains me to say it but, at one stage, Deidre was in with a crowd led by Charles Manson. She was one of many youngsters who knew him – and they were fascinated. He was an extraordinary character, charismatic in many ways, no question about it.”

Lansbury, after discovering her daughter had fallen into Manson’s circle, told her husband that they had to leave the Los Angeles area for good. Staying was not an option.

“We upped sticks and moved the family to a house I found in County Cork,” Lansbury said. “I was drawn to Ireland because it was the birthplace of my mother, and it was also somewhere my children wouldn’t be exposed to any more bad influences. I still have a house there which I try and visit at least once a year. So I refused all work for a year and simply kept house.”

Lansbury said “it took Deidre a little longer” to break her bad habits, “but she finally got married and she and her husband now live in Los Angeles, where they run their own Italian restaurant.”

@bijouxbroussard Grandma and I have been ploughing through old episodes of 'Murder She Wrote' lately-great casting, for one thing.I mentioned that Diedre used to swipe Angela's designer coats and bring them to Spahn's where the girls would cut them up to make quilts and vests and pillows. They were a creative bunch,in betwixt insane kill sprees...
@dubkebab Oh, wow…No wonder Angela was so worried.

@bijouxbroussard Although at first she gave her underage daughter a permission slip,of sorts, stating that Mr.Manson was her spiritual advisor and that she had parental permission to accompany him on road trips.
Plenty of Hollywood and LA music luminaries were tight with ol'crazy Charlie. Those were different times.

Manson was Weaponized by the CIA (to eff the Hippie movement).

He was a fun lad.

Some people are still unaware of the Beach Boys connection. That's an eyebrow raiser for a lot of people.

@bijouxbroussard The whole situation is chilling, then you get into his White Album fixation, Revolution/Revelation 9. I mean that album is creepy already; it didn't need Manson's help.
@uncalled4 It was all so bizarre. And people defending him to this day say, "Manson didn’t actually kill anyone." I always ask, "Do you consider Hitler or Pol Pot innocent because they didn’t personally pull the trigger or load people into the wagons ?" I have a feeling more people nowadays do feel that way. 🥺

@bijouxbroussard It's the people who yell "FIRE" and incite people with obvious mental limitations who might be the most dangerous of all. They narcissistically have other people doing their bidding.
