Get a bunch of friends, and listen to their advice. Your mum belongs to the older generation, so keep in mind that those folks often don't get the kids thinking. But at the same time, remember your Parents, are God's gift to you, and if you try and see God's purpose for you in this difficult time, and align your thoughts and actions with that purpose, you will come out shining.

And, you will eventually get the reward for being wise. Your mum is affected/victimized by the cares of the world, which no one is immune to, and frankly, who doesn't fall prey to the evil in the world? It's up to you to be the Wise one, be the mature one, and get the best out of situations like this in life, which sometimes lead nowhere. Remember that we all have a calling, a higher purpose in our creator, and when we align ourselves and thinking with his purpose, the world starts to make sense.
