how should you react to someone who acts 'familiar' when you don't know him / her

i've had this at times in the past with people, someone being too familiar with me when they don't know me? i find that very annoying, but more important, how should you respond to this situation? especially if you're someone like me who easily takes offence.

As a woman, I would say this happens to me far too often. If a man is overly familiar with me, I become cold toward him, abrupt, and I turn away, then walk away as quickly as I can.

If a woman is overly familiar toward me I don't take offense, but I usually just smile and mutter platitudes, and then I move on.
