Any dog can be caused to snap. Some shy away quickly while others go on offense. There are equal numbers of other breeds that can do the same damage as a snapped pitbull but they tend to get the focus of these events.

@Gibbon well I am not looking for a an aggressive dog but it seems like the ones shelters call pitbulls are actually mixed so they aren't that much like the breed

@StygianKohlrabi Yes there are many misnamed mixed dogs. I think there are in general 5 full pitbull breeds. There are also many English bull terrier mixes refered to as pitbulls which are not. Although they are equally powerful.
Some believe pits have a natural underlying aggression. The same can be said Shepard's and dobermans. I have been around almost all common breeds at one time or another including trained attack dogs and can say they all have a softer side. Even the ones trained to attack. They need to hear the magic word otherwise they can be just as friendly and playful as any other dog.
