Lyme disease cases in Michigan quadruple as tick population explodes

Lyme disease cases in Michigan increased from 2022 to 2025, according to data from the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services — jumping from 553 in 2022 to 2,167 confirmed cases last year.

An experimental vaccine (VLA15), developed by Pfizer and Valneva, is in phase three clinical trials and is expected to be submitted for FDA and European in 2026 and, if approved, may be released in late 2027. The vaccine has a 70% efficacy rate.
