Tuberculosis Doesn’t Respect Borders, US Aid Cuts Could Fuel a Global Health Crisis

Failing to treat tuberculosis (TB) outside the US will increase TB and multidrug-resistant TB in America.

TB cases in the US are already increasing by more than 15 percent a year. If this increase doubles to 30 percent annually, the amount that the US spends treating TB will triple by the end of the Trump administration, with more than twice as many deaths during this presidency than under Biden’s term.

If TB and multidrug-resistant TB in the US reach current global average rates, the cost of treating TB cases in the US would increase to over $11 billion annually.

you know what helps reduce TB cases in the U.S.? closing the border... winning!

@boudinMan Closing borders wouldn’t prevent TB because:

It's already endemic – Many countries, including the U.S., already have cases of TB. The main issue is reactivation in vulnerable populations, not just new cases from travel.

Latent TB can activate years later – A person infected long ago could develop active TB without recent travel.

Medical screening is more effective – Countries already use TB screening for high-risk travelers and immigrants. Early detection and treatment matter more than border closures.

Essential travel continues – Even with strict border control, essential workers, trade, and medical travel still occur. TB can spread through legal travel, not just illegal crossings.

It spreads domestically – Once inside, TB spreads within communities, especially in crowded conditions like prisons, shelters, and hospitals.

@SatanBurger so, people with TB coming over the border without being tested (because they're illegal) has no affect on the number of TB cases? gotcha. lol
