Variants and sub variants of all virus are giving alphanumeric designations so the first discovered variant is giving a letter A.

Yet depending on just how a virus mutates depends on how it's variant is next name. So "A" could become "B" or "AB".

It's depends on how much mutation has gone in the newer variant.

If a strain of virus is persistent for a long time then it's given a real name like SARS or SARS-Covid. If a lot of mutations occur then they use the alphanumeric system.

The full name of this variant is "SARS COVID-19 OMICRON BA4 or SARS COVID-19 OMICRON BA5".

At sometime they might come up with a real name for the BA part.
