It's funny how no one is dying of Flu anymore since early 2020...

Isn't that a blessing? 🤔

its almost like people are socially distancing wearing masks and practising good hygiene you twit
Markmywurdz · 56-60, M
Yet that same social distancing, wearing masks and practising good hygiene hasn’t been so effective in reducing CV19 cases. Strange how it works for one virus but not the other 🤔 @Bushmanoz

@Markmywurdz yeah? funny how we mandated it here in Australia and our state and went down to zero cases and zero deaths for a month.
Elessar · 26-30, M
@Markmywurdz SARS-CoV-2 spreads better (higher R0 than the flu, it's something speculated since the early beginning, then confirmed), hence yeah, containment measures impact it differently.

Similar things have been mandated in a lot of places, with highly variable results. And as a scientist, reduced incidence makes me happy, while zero makes me suspicious. @Bushmanoz

@Markmywurdz lol.. zero is a possible outcome. Surely as a scientist you know this. Our government made the tough choices in order to try and beat this thing and most people got on board. So the outcome has been good. Its not over though. Recent overseas travellers have brought it back to one state.

last I heard there was an outbreak of 17 cases. The people are being quarantined and traced and most states have locked borders again

Yes, possible, but unlikely in something as complex and chaotic as human society. As a scientist I was also taught to suspect that zero means your measuring device has stopped working. @Bushmanoz

@Markmywurdz unlikely yet here we are

Markmywurdz · 56-60, M
So why are we seeing lockdowns and border closures again? @LvChris

As I said earlier, something as complex and chaotic as human society... @LvChris

@Markmywurdz Countries where compliance was high and the response by the govt. was fast have eradicated it in 2 (two) months.

I live in Switzerland where people tend to follow the rules, yet it’s still with us. @Elessar

I won’t deny it has improved the situation, but zero? I remain skeptical and I really don’t care whether you believe my ‘claim’ or not. @LvChris
Elessar · 26-30, M
@Markmywurdz I live in north Italy and we both know how "compliant" are people in the region, especially in skiing facilities/resorts - that over there were kept open even when the cases/pop ratio was higher than here - and generally touristic places (see also Sardinia last summer).

The Swiss response to the emergency is nowhere comparable to, say, South Korea or Taiwan, for mentioning two.

I can’t comment on the Far East, but from where I’m looking, everything was shut down pretty rapidly and I see very little non-compliance,either in my region or in other cities. I don’t yet consider ski resorts much of a factor, as most of what has taken place so far was outside the ski season. There were recent thoughts of keeping them open, but that now seems to have been abandoned. As of tomorrow, everything is closed. @Elessar

@Markmywurdz They were open amid the raise if cases, let alone people packing in public transportation pretty much all over Europe because in summer the general opinion was "good riddance, it's over". Once a wave is seeded it takes a lot for numbers to drop (you have those who got it in touristic places spreading it to immediate family - add 5/7 day for incubation; who will infect friends/partners/whatever, another 5/7 days of incubation, and so forth). In Bergamo with a way stricter lockdown than both Italy and Switzerland have in place right now it took two months for the situation to get under control.
