The health benefits of GLP-1 medications keep getting more exciting
The family of GLP-1 drugs re-wrote the chapter on preventing and treating diabetes. Then they became the new wonder weight loss regimes. Many who use them swear that they help with depression, alcohol dependence, and anxiety.
Now, as presented at the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) meeting multiple presentations suggest the the GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1) medications Ozempic, Wegovy & Mounjaro, which have already been shown to slow the progression of certain breast, lung, colon, and liver cancers may also prevent or significantly delay the development of these cancers for patients who are already utilizing them for weight management or diabetes.
The 2026 ASCO meeting in Chicago presented more than 40 studies, abstracts, oral presentations and poster presentations which examined the relationship between GLP-1-based drugs and cancer.
Many of these cancers are known to be more common in diabetics and the obese. The anti-inflammatory and immune-modulatory properties of the GLP-1 drugs are believed to be the mechanisms of action in moderating the cancers but the most exciting revelation is that they appear effective in such a broad spectrum of cancers.
