Palmoplantar pustulosis and MTHFR

I have had Palmoplantar Pustulosis since I was 28 years old, and there seems to be some evidence connecting MTHFR variants with autoimmune conditions. Palmoplantar pustulosis has recently been classified as an autoimmune disorder. Both Palmoplantar pustulosis and endometriosis ( which is part of what led to my hysterectomy at 21 years old) have now been classified as possible autoimmune disorders. If this is the case, my MTHFR variants may have contributed to both conditions. 🤔

MTHFR Variants and Palmoplantar Pustulosis

MTHFR (methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase) variants are genetic mutations that can affect folate metabolism. There is some emerging research suggesting that MTHFR variants may contribute to various health issues, including autoimmune conditions and skin disorders.

Palmoplantar Pustulosis Overview

Palmoplantar pustulosis is a chronic skin condition characterized by the formation of pustules on the palms and soles. This condition is often associated with psoriasis but can occur independently. The exact cause is not fully understood, but it is believed to have both genetic and environmental components.

Connection Between MTHFR Variants and Palmoplantar Pustulosis

Genetic Links: Some studies suggest that individuals with MTHFR variants may have a higher susceptibility to autoimmune diseases, which could include conditions like palmoplantar pustulosis. However, direct evidence linking specific MTHFR mutations to palmoplantar pustulosis is limited.

Inflammation and Immune Response: MTHFR influences homocysteine levels and methylation processes, impacting inflammatory pathways and immune system function. Since palmoplantar pustulosis is thought to involve dysregulated immune responses, it is conceivable that MTHFR variants could play a role.

Current Research: There is ongoing research into the role of various genetic factors, including MTHFR variants, in skin conditions. A definitive causal relationship specifically between MTHFR variants and palmoplantar pustulosis has yet to be established.

Many people have this without knowing..it is not uncommon. A functional MD can help diagnose this.
