Whole Foods admittedly sells as “organic” food products from CHINA and proudly admits it

Not at Whole Foods Market. For example, our Private Label team sources a few high quality organic products from China and we let our shoppers know that up front.

Of course one must carefully examine the small print on the labels to discover this.

Most foods sold in retail stores must display information on where the food was grown, produced, or made in the country where it was grown or produced under the new Country of Origin Labelling Information Standard (Food Labelling Standard). The country of origin of a food can be omitted from the label if certain conditions are met. Businesses can still provide country of origin information in these circumstances. Priority foods include foods with country of origin labels unless they are classified as non-priority. Non-priority foods are exempt from having to provide a text description of where they were grown, produced, made, or packed.

On December 18, 2015, Congress repealed the original law requiring beef and pork labels based on origin after WTO rulings prohibited some labels. Most other food products, on the other hand, do not require an indication of origin. When determining whether or not information is mandatory or voluntary, a consumer’s origin indication must not mislead him or her. It’s critical to be aware of what’s on the labels of food products and their origin.

So Whole Foods SAYS it provides this information to be transparent when in fact they are required by law to do do.

Organic or Local? Is Made in China Safe? Is Whole Foods Misleading Us? Here’s the thing. If you’re trying to live a healthy life, you ought to buy organics for yourself, and your children, even your pets. If you’re trying to live an eco-responsible life, you ought to do the same—but you’ll want to prioritize food and beverages that are produced as locally as possible, too. Buying organics that are Made in China is fine, from a health standpoint. From an eco-standpoint, it’s laughable, so laughable I feel like crying.

Support your local farmers whenever possible—whether at a farmers’ market, Whole Foods or some other grocery, or at farm-to-table restaurants.

To my mind, this old video (that continues to make waves; a reader just tweeted it to me this morning) is a hackjob, a disgrace to journalism.

Still, it raises good questions and makes us think. If you didn’t know that much of the so-called “eco-responsible” foods you were buying in Whole Foods

If they’re going to put into bold “California” on the label, they shouldn’t put China in fine print on the back.”

AFTER READING THIS ITS TIME TO BUY DIRECTLY FROM LOCAL FARMERS, ACTUALLY GET REAL ORGANIC AND SAVE MONEY. THE USDA DOES NOT INSPECT CHINESE FOOD PRODUCTS. WHOLE FOODS HIRES A “INDEPENDENT” PRIVATE COMPANY TO DO THE INSPECTING. YEAH RIGHT

I wouldn’t trust buying tea or a teapot from China much less organic foods.
