I can only go by my own experiences.
I gave up drinking, nearly a decade ago, after being told that if I carried on drinking I'd be dead inside of 9 months. Never had one since but I've had occasions where I have picked up the wrong glass by mistake and had a total freak out - scary, very scary. So, I would say that.
Now, whether it was because I had already gone through all that and have had experience, or maybe it's easier, or maybe because I had other things going on, last year I gave up heroin and cocaine (mainly a coke user) with being pregnant. I just found myself bored with it all and gave it up straight away.
I can't remember if I did have any side effects, unlike the giving up the drink shakes etc, or that I was too busy with the thoughts of being pregnant again.
So, for me, It was (and still is when I pick up the wrong glass by mistake...) alcohol.
