What can cause a good date to turn out bad?

I had a breakfast date around 15-20 years ago at Denny’s. My date picked up the tab first and his eyes widened like saucers and he went pale in the face. He immediately started whining about how expensive the food was. At first I thought we’d been overcharged. There was no way our breakfasts could have been that expensive. It was Denny’s, for fuck’s sake.

Then I looked at the tab. We weren’t overcharged. Our tab was $23 after tips, which was typical for two Denny’s breakfasts at the time (and still very affordable!). Yet he was so shocked by how “expensive” it was. I offered to pay for my own breakfast. He took me up on my offer but still kept frowning about the cost of his own breakfast.

He asked me out again later but I declined a second date after that. I kind of figured at that point that if a Denny’s breakfast was that expensive to him, then I won’t be able to take him anywhere without him losing his mind about prices and making things uncomfortable.
