It would’ve been our first date today, but I just couldn’t go through with it.

I think you handled it very well. It is a bit odd to me that some of the commenters here think he's a villian.... sounds like it just wasn't a good fit. He was nice and thoughtful but, had his faults that made you and he incompatible, it happens.
