I just read that they updated the definition of alcoholism to mean more than 4 drinks a day. I mostly have cooking wine topped off with water twice a day, really amounts to one drink. Why didn't they say this sooner?

Alcoholic isn't really a medical term. The medical term is Alcohol Use Disorder and it ranges from mild to severe.
The definition of an alcoholic i.e severe AUD is someone who needs a drink first thing in the morning, can't limit their drinking, spend a lot of the time drunk, do dangerous things while and have withdrawals like DTs.
