Virtual/Online Companions?

Do individuals really utilize this? I read an article that people use this service for conversations or just to have someone to talk to. Not for sexual interaction but because they are lonely or just enjoy the conversation.

I've seen YouTube and Facebook advertising them out to the public pretty frequently. I think it's too soon to tell what affect they have without more testing. I would think most see it as novelty thing rather than a go to for self-care. With anything there is always a small group that gets addicted of course.
