"You're the First, the Last, My Everything" – Barry White

[media=https://youtu.be/E7zmRvhFEYo]
"You're the First, the Last, My Everything" was originally written as a country song by musician and songwriter Peter Sterling Radcliffe. It had the title "You're My First, You're My Last, My In-Between" and went unrecorded for 21 years. Radcliffe eventually offered the song to his friend, Barry White.

The R&B/soul artist immediately saw the song's potential, telling the songwriter, "Sterling, that song is a smash . . . I want you to stay out of my face for the next two or three weeks. When you come back, you're going to be part of a smash".

White subsequently changed the title and part of the melody, re-wrote most of the lyrics, and recorded the reworked composition as a disco song. Songwriting credits were shared by Radcliffe and White on what was indeed a "smash" hit: The recording made it to #1 on the US R&B chart, #2 on the US pop and US Dance Club charts, and the top 10 in at least eight other countries in 1974–1975.

That was Barry White's next hit after "Can't Get Enough Of Your Love Babe", which I heard on the radio this morning. It's hard to believe those songs are now 50 years old, I remember them so well in the charts.

@NankerPhelge They're both great songs. Even though contemporary music is very different from the music of 50 years ago, I think the two Barry White songs probably would be hits if they were released today.

@Rutterman They both still get played a lot on the radio, so very likely.

I like the Barry White one. I've never heard of Peter Sterling Radcliffe.

@KarenisKenziesmum I've only heard Barry White's version and like it very much. Not sure if Radcliffe's version was ever recorded in its original form.
