beginning in 1906 edward s. curtis began to document the native american culture and their history

he documented the the lives and history of over 80 tribes from alaska south into mexico. he did so in great deatil thru over 40,000photographs and and over 10,000 recordings. this is the only historical record of many tribes that exist. his efforts were commissioned by j.p. morgan of all people.

An achievement it may be but personally i don't want yet another white man's version of anothers culture.
Especially if financed by a corporation whose motives aren't likely to be in that cultures best interests.

I think there's good reasoning behind orally telling of one's history and culture and ensuring it's descendants know the history and the truth beyond anyone else

@Missbirdie1986 The fact those surviving Native Americans, to this day, haven't documented their history for anybody else is an indication they don't want anyone else knowing about it.
If they know nothing they can't misrepresent it to serve their own ends can they
