Why The Wolf Howls At The Moon - A Cherokee Story

Long ago in the Heavenly plain the Wolf fell in love with the moon. The pair were happy together, frolicking in the night sky. This made the Sun very jealous and he conspired to rid himself of the meddling Wolf.

The Sun went to the wolf and told him if he were to cross to the mortal plain and retrieve a certain rare flower then the Moon would be very happy and would surely love the Wolf forever. What the Wolf did not know was once it crossed to the mortal plain, he would never be allowed back in the Heavenly realm.

The Wolf went and found the flower, and only too late realized the Sun's trickery. Seperated from his love for eternity, to this day when the Wolf see's the Moon full in the sky he cries his longing to be with her once more.

Nice story ...

@Convivial thanks my uncle told it to me, my great grandmother told it to him.

@Deceased thanks for the further information... I'm guessing you are of indigenous descent?
Deceased · M
@Convivial Half Cherokee. My great grandma was a Cherokee princess.
Convivial · 26-30, F
@Deceased thank you for that, and sharing part of your heritage
Deceased · M
@Convivial my pleasure. Its something I'm very proud of.

@Deceased as you should be... The old stories must be kept alive through retelling
Deceased · M
@Convivial its always a shame when good stories die. Its a historical and cultural loss for all of humanity.

@Deceased Just following up some, is it a personal story, or of cultural significance in curiosity?
Deceased · M
@SW-User its an old story the Cherokee have told for generations. My great grandmother heard it from her parents and so forth. Just one of those old, verbally passed down tales. As far as I know anyway.
SW-User
@Deceased Thank you. I appreciate the story, and have heard of similiar stories in folklore; but it's more than folklore for you.
Deceased · M
@SW-User its close to home because the Cherokee believe that all of the tribes were descended from specific animals, bear, deer, etc. And the tribe my great grandmother came from was said to be descendants of the wolves.
So that story does mean a lot to me for selfish reasons, obviously
SW-User
@Deceased It's fine if it's from selfish reasons, look at this world

@Deceased My first partner was Indigenous, she did not identify, and she was only part but I sensed a part of her that listened to what other's didn't...
Deceased · M
@SW-User mhm. I'm a shaman so I'm sometimes more in tune with things than I'd like. But it serves me well at times. As with most gifts its a double edged sword.
SW-User
@Deceased I always find that self identification curious, how does one know they are more in tune things with things than they like? I like philosophy, I like literature, I love art, and I'll give your words, but how do you know?
Deceased · M
@SW-User I can feel the energy of nature around me. I can sense things no one else can perceive, on the supernatural side of things. I'm empathic to a degree thats nearly terrifying and lately I'm something of a pre-cognitive. I've predicted far too many things that have gone on to happen. I know it sounds strange, even to me trying to explain it. I hope it makes sense.
Deceased · M
@SW-User the worst part of the pre-cog stuff is I'll just flippantly say something is going to happen a certain way, just being my smart ass self and then it happens exactly as I say. *sigh* I wonder if this is how Cassandra felt.
SW-User
@Deceased It's not strange. May feel strange. May even leave you feeling estranged at moments. I know what shaman means, in Indigenous terms, and listening to you, I may imagine some outside may identify that way may feel that way too. I have a sense of a person's energy before I talk with them, and it's rare I talk with them, it fails, my intuition doesn't see before without knowing why. I've had scary moments in my past, where one friend thanks me for calling him when he was about to commit suicide. He says I had a premonition, that I knew.
Deceased · M
@SW-User its an entirely new thing. Its not something that happened before about a year ago. Not sure what changed. Maybe I leveled up and learned new skills. Fuck if I know anymore.

Of all the little "gifts" pre-cog is the most annoying. I hate being right so much. It gets boring after awhile. Not to mention people think somethings wrong with you after awhile of you just being right. Even about mundane things.
SW-User
@Deceased I've only learned you can be both right and wrong. Maybe it's me, but I learned it's healthier to keep your heart open to not define yourself this way. I always know when I'm right this time, I'm gonna be wrong in the future.... c'est la vie.
Deceased · M
@SW-User maybe I should start flipping a mental coin before I say things. 50/50 chances of being right or wrong, yeh?
Deceased · M
@SW-User not being sarcastic, even if it sounds that way.
SW-User
@Deceased I don't know, if you can weave this dream apart of mine, I'll give you a chance (lightly, with respect).... so last night I dreamt, of being ocean front in somewhere southern, upon a small bay.... luxury homes abound, us with just a small wooden cabin. My family and I went on a boat ride, I saw children upon docks in deep calm waters and not one of them jumping. I asked about that, in my dream, to my mother. She said, that's only from they don't let them here for understanding of risk... (hardly possible, but fits into my histories).... We then got back to our cabin, a wooden cabin, amongst large homes, and there was a grizzly bear facing us.

The odd chances, a wooden cabin amongst a small bay in the southern atlantic, if I had to guess Florida (dream, right), and a Grizzly? When the grizzly charged her, I shot the bear. (against my spirit)... but when you have your mother begging you? That Bear, or her partner, then was banging down the walls of the wooden frames of the windows of the cabin..... (so they would not have the shards of glass in them)

Thoughts?
Deceased · M
@SW-User the Bear may of been your totem trying to tell you something. Sometimes if your totem is one of the predator animals like that they may appear a threat, but are actually there to protect you from things far worse. In my dreams a wolf will often startle me away from going places I later realize were dangerous.
SW-User
@Deceased Possible, and I have my own interpretations into that, and you could be right, but I left out I woke up trembling, looking over my cheek seeing my cat giving me soft eyes. I think, even if we can see our threats, hurts, love in dreams when we can it's better we bring it into consciousness, and how difficult that can be in this world.
