I think Indians should be referred to as Indians .. because Indian subcontinent is a distinct cultural identity .. we are quite different from Asians and distinctly separated geographically by the huge Himalayas .. thus ensuring distinct unmixed civilizations .. calling Indians Asians is ignorance or nonacceptance of their identity (which unfortunately majority of the world tends to) .. To me Indians are Indians and native Americans are Americans and not Indians .. they cannot be Indians because geographically they are nowhere close to India :)

India is part of Asia. Rather we loved to be identified as Indian not as Asians

Sorry. Didn't read your whole post. Since Asia is a continent that had many nations, ethnics and races, yes Indians are also Asian. We say "Asian" meaning a race label and that is misleading and incorrect. "Asian" would include anyone originating from that continent just like "African" would be descriptive of anyone originating from that contingent regardless of race or skin color.
Assuming that "white" is a proper or complete identification for all Caucasoids is just as misleading and incorrect as is the race label "black" is exclusive of the many different skin colors of Negroids and misleading. Assuming all mongloid race Asian have yellow skin is just as wrong and excluding of mongoloids of lighter and darker skins.
East Indians are Asian yes, but mostly Caucasoid race even though their skin colors very from pale to very dark - just like those of the mongloid abd negroid races.

I can't tell you the origins, per say, but they were not called Indians for that reason. When Christopher Columbus came to America searching for India, he mistook the natives to be people from India; Indians.
Personally I prefer the term Native American, as a native myself.

Oh dang, I just realized due to @AvGeek's reply you might be asking something different. My apologies XD
AvGeek · 31-35, M
Are you referring to East Indians in India or native Americans? Indians are Caucasoid race. Native Americans are believed to have asiatic/mongoloid ancestry - many of then at least. So I've read.
Dolimyte · 41-45, M
Often refered to as south asians
Calmsoul · 31-35, M

I hate it when people ask me if I'm East Indian or Native American. No one realize the real Indians are the "East Indians". Damn you, Colombus!!!!
