I Am English

I am English and very proud of it. Sadly, over the generations, we seem to have lost sight of the fact that England is a nation - an ethnic group belonging to England - English.
Britain is a multi-national society so why, when asked to give our nationality on most forms, we are simply offered "British" as the only option.
How long I wonder until even that option is denied us and replaced with "European". Heaven forbid!

Callmedex, every country has its problems, my country has a dreadful reputation overseas, it doesn't make me less proud of where I'm from and what I am, other people's behavior doesn't define me.

@Rubysoo...I get what you mean re Britain being seen as just England. I never thought of it that way before. I thought the Union Flag represented all 4 nations already, but yes, an English anthem and we should compete as 4 different counties instead of United Kingdom - that would raise the profile if Wales, Scotland and NI. You and me for 1st and 2nd ministers of a new Re-united Kingdom!!

@Rubysoo - I believe we can still all be united but at the same time, maintaining our unique identities of Welsh, Scottish, Irish and English. The main problem with the EU is that it refuses to recognises the importance of national pride and I believe that played a great part in the UK leaving.
The worrying growth of the extreme right wing parties throughout the EU is one of the consequences. They are all based on nationalist type parties, and people are flocking towards them in frustration over the the direction the EU is moving towards an ever more Federalist State.
In Poland, the Law and Justice Party now attracts 35% of the vote. Switzerland has the Swiss People's Party at 30%. The Danish People's Party has 231% of their vote. Similar parties in Austria, Finland, Belgium and Hungary all sitting at 20% and rising, yet Brussels seems unable to grasp what is going on.
Excellent result in the Euro 2016 by the way. Here's one Englishman who was behind Wales all the way. You may not have got to the finals but ity was a first class performance and a fantastic homecoming you gave them all.

Here in the UK we are very vocal as to whether we are English, Welsh, Scotish or Irish. It's great to have that pride. I'm welsh and we celebrate our 'welshness' a great deal...which I personally love. But.... it doesn't really help in our quest for a 'united Britain' which we desperately needed now we are leaving the EU. 😕

I live in the US. My parents came from Canada. We spoke English and French at home. Dad's ancestors are from Wales. Mom's mother is from Shetland and her dad, an indigenous person (Athabaskan). Mom is blond, so my Indian granddad must have had some blond ancestor (maybe Russian?). We are not English by blood, maybe somewhat British, but we speak and think more English than anything else. We are all more complicated than we may think, but we can all live and work together.

Well joining the EU didn't help make it any less confusing!

The problem is Britain is seen by the rest of the world as England. That does not please the Scots, Welsh or Irish!! I really don't see how we can change this into 'British pride' I wish we could. 1st step. A new British flag representing ALL 4 nations and a new anthem....or at least a new English one to differenciate between English and British.

We will be more English after 23rd June. Or will have permenantly ended our sufferage within the EU.

And, by the way, I meant that I loved Europe as a continent, not the EU that is harming the UK. I will vote to leave.

I consider myself to be half English. I was born in England to a family that is half English and half Irish; I do not see myself as British. As for Europe, I love it but I will never call myself European before I call myself English and Irish. We have to remember our roots and heritage.
