@RebeccaG It was only at my secondary school too, the school was brand new, when I started, this was in the 1960s. So there was no risk from splinters, maybe they thought it would protect the new wooden flooring.

@SW-User indeed, no rubber soles on the floor, and brand new as you say no issues with splinters, but would always need a regular clean!

@SW-User That is what they say at my school gym. It's a brand new and expensive surface. No shoes are allowed which may mark it, so we do all indoor PE in bare feet.
